As a young person who grew up in the Baptist church, he was taught and very much believed that homosexuality was a sin. Following his coming out during his junior year at Emory & Henry, both his church and his family ostracized him. Feeling a call to ministry, he enrolled at Wake Forest Divinity School. While a student there, his “field” position was at Green Street UMC, one of the most inclusive reconciling congregations in our region, a place where he found welcome in the church.
